If you’re on a budget but your carpets stink, what is there to do? You could light a bunch of candles and hope it covers the smell, or you can make your own carpet deodorizer!

This easy carpet deodorizer is all natural and it won’t harm or stain your carpets. Depending on your preference this recipe only has two or three ingredients.

 You will need:

- A mixing bowl
 - A strainer or other utensil for an even application (any shaker will do)
- 1 cup baking soda*
- Your favorite essential oil (We like using lemongrass for its smell and it keeps the bugs out)
- Borax (optional)

*Depending on you’re the amount of carpet you want to cover you may need more.  For every one cup of mixture, you will want 18-20 drops of your essential oil.

Instructions:

Step One: You can mix your carpet deodorizer in a bowl first and then transfer to your shaker or mix directly in the shaker. **Start with one a half cup baking soda and add 8 – 10 drops of your essential oil and mix. Then add the second half your baking soda, add 8 – 10 more drops of your essential oil, and mix.

**If you’re adding Borax you will use a 1:1 ratio of baking soda to borax.

Step Two:  Transfer to shaker (if mixed in a bowl) and leave over night to let the oils spread.

Step Three: Sprinkle mixture evenly over your carpets and let sit for at least 10 minutes. If your carpet is really smelly you can leave the baking soda up to 24 hours.

Step Four: Vacuum the baking soda up from your carpets. Don’t worry if it doesn’t all come up at once, just vacuum over it until it comes up!

If your carpets still stink after using this nifty DIY carpet deodorizer then it’s probably time to call Chem-Dry of Central Illinois!
